Chapter 107 - Nymphomaniacs
..... female bonobos are positively nymphomaniac in their habits. They have sex at the slightest suggestion and in a great variety of ways (including oral and homosexual) and are sexually attractive to males for long periods. A young female bonobo who arrives at a tree where others of the species are feeding will first mate with each of the males in turn - including the adolescents - only then get on with eating. Mating is not wholly indiscriminate, but it is very catholic.
-extracted from "The Red Queen" by Matt Ridley

I thought the way that paragraph was written was kinda nice and sweet. :) oh. Bonobos are real creatures btw.. they are a type of chimps... and yes, that is part of my reading material... hehe... ;p

[edit] haha.. this chapter is so amusing... "Australian hopping mice both "lock" this penis into the female after copulation and cannot free it for some time, thus preventing others from having a go." Well, now imagine: mice... imagine mice hopping... imagine 2 mice stuck together hopping.... ever played a 3-legged race? ;p [/edit]

Chapter 105 - Of Boats and Cameras
So it was the day of the Cambridge Spring Regatta today... :) Awesome weather finally, for a day at least... I was coxing Churchill W2 for the race, which I thought went quite well, considering we had 3 novices in our boat, who've never raced before. We lost to Corpus W1, which i guess was alright, considering they are a much more experienced boat than us, and that being their first boat, we managed to keep just about 1.5 boat lengths apart till the railway bridge (>1/2 the course) before they pulled away from us...

so here's my beloved W2 crew waiting to race... lovely weather as you can tell....

and of cameras, I just bought a camera from eBay today! a Nikon F5. This is termed as the World's Best (Film) Camera by many photographers, the pinnacle and epitome of modern (film) cameras. And for quite a bargain as well at 360 pounds (including postage). Can't wait to receive this new toy. Sooo exciting. I'll wait for this camera to arrive before I post a photo of my camera/lens collection. 3 days (stupid bank holiday on Monday)... 3 long days....

anyway, today got no update on mrbrown lah... nothing too exciting for now.. hehe... but i'll share this short videoclip which i thought was quite amusing to watch... :)

Chapter 104 - Workaholic
I am a 100% workaholic. Not a study-a-holic though.. haha... I think I do more other work than studying... hmm... =X

So I haven't been updating everyone on my gastronomical creations (wah cheem phrase) lately, but I thought i'd share this: Fried Bee Hoon. I didn't realise it actually looked so photogenic... haha.. But yeah, it was tasty.. reminded me of the beehoon i loved to have for breakfast... Yummmmmm!

And so i also found out that my college has a darkroom. So after making an investment of darkroom chemicals and photographic paper, i am proud to present the "Kenny's Wall of Prints", it is longer than the Great Wall of China and prettier too. ;p But yeah, it's cool to watch the prints "develop" right before your eyes.... nice nice nice... My next project? A pinhole camera me thinks...

PS: i think the random images complements the site real well!

Chapter 102 - The Countdown begins

5 days to the end of lectures
20 days to the start of my exams
26 days to the END of my exams
29 days to Garden Party/end of May Bumps/Siswi coming over
34 days to my flight back to Singapore
36 days to starting work on Cabaret [ps. come watch!]

------------------------------------

Today's weather can be summed up in two words - screwed up. This morning, we couldn't go rowing because the wind was too strong (a red flag. the highest order) Then after my lecture, i went to the post office, the clouds looming in the distance. 5 mins later when i was about to leave the post office, it starts pouring. hmm. then after braving the rain, 5 mins later, the sun is out in full glory. and this alternates for the whole afternoon. mr weather guy, make up your mind leh.... :)

Chapter 101 - *quack*
I had such a great time this evening! Guess what I was doing... ;p
I was feeding ducks! Well, decided i'd go shooting (with my camera) today and decided since I had some extra bread sitting in my room, why not feed the ducks? And then i remembered that there were a family of duck(lings) and goose(lings) near the Cavendish labs....

And so Sean and I cycled down to the Cavendish. On the way, we also saw a *hop* rabbit *hop*. I'm sooo not used to rabbits being in the wild. To kenny, rabbits = pets = stay and home in a cage. To sean, rabbits = food. haha. but yeah, it's so cute.

So when we arrived on location, the goose and goslings were the first to spot us, and they dunno what is call "paiseh", knowing that we got food for them, headed straight for us. I must say it was quite a traumatic experience initially to have 6 goslings and 2 geese so close to you especially when you're sitting down and seeing "eye-to-eye" with the geese. but soon enough, the goslings and some (male) ducks were huddled all around me trying to sneak bites of the bread i brought.

and they are damn cheeky! at least once, while i was holding the piece of bread in one hand and morsels in the other, they took a sneak attack from behind me (i was sitting down) and grabbed the (big) piece of bread away from me! hmm. but nonetheless they were all very cute.. and i've never had ducks/geese/ducklings/goslings feed off my hand before... or for that matter, ducklings were kind of fictional in my vocabulary before I came here. :)

to finish off, i thought i'd put this picture. -goslings in close proximity- the 2 photos i put up here are quite lousy cos they were shot using my handphone camera.. (i was shooting on film, which takes a while to be developed and scanned..)

I thought the hokkien one was quite funny.... :)

And while I was trying to drop MrBrown an email to let him know that i was using his podcast, i stumbled upon the MrBrown skype voicemail message... (was typing an email then eh, how come got people talking wan...)

apologise for the big file ah, cos it's a wave file... ;p

Chapter 98 - A World Without Colours
Ever wondered what a world without colours is? Welcome to the B&W world where colours are not cool. :)

So yeah, in case you're wondering what kenny is talking about and if studying has gotten to my head (what studying?), it's actually because I had my virgin (well, almost) darkroom experience yesterday (my first being at the Physics labs). So yeah, what you see above is one of my prints from the darkroom. Pretty cool eh. It's really quite fun to watch your prints develop, although i must say the safelight (red light) gets on my nerves after a while... ;p

Here's the roll of film we processed in the darkroom. On hindsight i think it was quite hilarious. :) Because it was a medium format film (as opposed to the 35mm film we're used to seeing), we had some trouble loading the film onto the developing reel. And two guys (Sean and I) groping fumbling around in the dark for about 20 mins trying to load the film.. haha.

Darkroom processing is really cool! we've made orders for more photographic paper and chemicals because the ones in the fitz darkroom is kinda f**ked up, having been in there for about 10 years (the last log in the darkroom was 1996... eerie eh).. But we had a couple of decent prints in the end, after trying to print 10 shots on some paper that won't work anymore. Still, it's really exciting! Gee, can i not take my exams pretty please... :)

[ying: woohoo. i award you with the best commentary award for your nice comments! *grinz*]

Chapter 97 - Tribute to Royston Tan
I dedicate this post to Singaporean Film-maker Royston Tan.
I just finished watching "15" by Royston Tan on DVD (original one btw... so hard to find...). There's something about the show that I could connect to somehow and understand. Perhaps, at some point in my life, we all go through such a phase. Maybe not. There's something about the rawness and non-actedness of 15 that really struck me.

(This is from the director's commentary) Although "15" has been to so many countries around the world, only in San Francisco did no one walk out of the show, which convinced Royston that the SF audience was "shock proof". I too thought I would be shock proof or resistant at least, but i was not to be. Many a scene, I simply couldn't bare to watch... It is SO VIVID. vivid in a way that you know this is not a Hollywood blockbuster where you have stuntsman and visual effects. Vivid because everything is in some ways real. Really.

I also thought the ending was quite poignant and I was moved. Although I can't say that there is a general "storyline" througout the movie. But what I think the ending really wanted to say was that, deep down inside these "gangsters" and "hooligans" we perceive, they are really just an 15-year-old...

If you have not watched 15 yet, I urge you to. I almost caught it at some film festival in Singapore before I came over, except noone else seemed to be interested. Managed to catch Mee Pok Man (not the Mr Brown one.. ;p) instead. Of course, I will be bringing the DVD home too, so anyone interested, can look for me.

I salute Royston Tan for having done such a wonderful job. :)

Chapter 96 - Sickness Index
Hmm. I decided to give my condition a sickness index.

Strength of virus: 8/10
This virus is pretty virulent I must say. Afterall, my supervisor carried it all the way from Germany. Made me feel so miserable the whole weekend. *frown* of course it was a good excuse for me to stay away from work too. :)

Kenny's present condition: 7/10
Well, after dousing my body with countless Strepsils and max strength Lemsips, I think I'm feeling slightly more alive. Although I imagine the war of the virus with my immune system is currently at its peak (World War III anyone? Bring on the Nukes! ;p) I really hope this goes away soon. it's not good at all. And i haven't been this sick in a while now......

Anyway, i am proud to bring to you Cambridge on Film - Shots taken in Cambridge on a roll of Kodak 200 Gold film. Can't say I have the best of equipment/film, but i think they're pretty decent shots nonetheless... some of my favourites from the roll:

One of my favourite shots.. There's something attractive about it... ;p

King's college chapel in wide angle view...

Some random roadside weed that I thought was growing in a very cute manner... :)

The plant in my room. greenery!

The rest of the shots are available here, but for some strange reason that i've not yet understood, the thumbnails don't show up. *FROWN* very disappointing. but can still access the full sized images...

Tata for now!

Chapter 95 - Some interesting stuff
well, while looking at the Cambridge newsgroups yesterday, someone posted this thing about dogging, and provided a link to wikipedia's definition of it. I thought it was highly amusing, especially the "Etiquette and Safety" section... Check it out here

also, in other amusing news, check out Mr Brown's persistently non-polical podcasts... This one, as recommended by Andre, is damn funny! (seriously... damn funny... can die... haha) Of course, you must have been following the James Gomez issue... Even if you haven't it's still worth listening to.. =) Also check out Mr Brown's site!

Anyway, had a loooong rest last night, woke up spitting a thick blog of phlegm. Yuck. And met up with Fraser who was en route back home but stopped by to meet up with me. It was nice to meet and catch up again, and walked around town, had tea, although I can't say the weather was being all too friendly. And now I'm back in my room.. *sniff* reckon i should get some work done now... ;p

Chapter 94 - My vote is secret
So i did travel down to London yesterday to vote. Voting was done at the London High Commission of Singapore. It was quite amusing though I thought. There were no other voters around, cos I arrived at a not-3-not-4 time of 4.30pm. haha. (of course the odds were pretty low, considering there are only 550 overseas voters? hmm) Anyway, from the entrance of the high com to the voting room, i was ushered by a total of 4 members of staff from the high com, and it wasn't all that long a distance anyway! And as John put it quite aptly, they were quite civil (duhz, being civil servants.. ;p) but not friendly enough to offer you a curry puff... :)
So here's the high com. A photo that costs me $50 cos I lost my spare camera battery taking this shot. (i only realised it after boarding the tube.. *frown*)

So anyway, I wasn't the first person to vote... Zhongyi was and he was featured in the news (hur hur)... Check out the article here. I was also mentioned too. Was interviewed over the phone, although I must say i was misquoted. The journey from Cambridge to London is only 1hr 45 mins by coach, not 3 hours as written. But I don't mind lah, makes my journey to middle earth sound very Herculean indeed...

---------------------------------

So last Sunday, I went down to Cottenham with Sean & Bob to check out this camera fair. We cycled down and went past this field of oil seed rape in full bloom. Endless yellow flowers in sight, juxtaposed with the dramatic clouds in the sky. Very nice indeed.

And i'm proof that the flu bug spreads. I'm quite sure I caught it from my supervisor when I had supervision on Wednesday cos he wasn't feeling too well and I was the nearest to him. *sniff* sighz.. feels horrible.... urgh...
