Chapter 196 - Cambridge in Spring
Over the weekend, it was nice and sunny and well-worth ditching the books for a stroll out in the sun, and not forgetting to bring my camera along too. Presenting my latest album - Cambridge iN Spring. :) Enjoy!

the typical River Cam shot

Trinity College - back entrance

Sheer number of bicycles....

A nesting swan.. Just the other day, I even saw one building the nest... This one has eggs out of the nest though.. There were several theories from the people watching, including one that said "population control".. hmm. strange.

One of my favourite ones in this album... For some reason they were heading away from me - i wonder why.. hehe..

Rest of the shots can be found HERE

-----------------------

And yes - packing's a BITCH. i've just spent the entire day stuffing my room into boxes. it's terribly tiring to have to "move house" every term. And I'm having a slight headache cos I haven't had coffee today.... :(

Chapter 195 - Anime-mania
In case you're sick of watching downsized, reduced quality anime on Youtube, fret not. There's this site that has quite a few nice and new anime for direct download! Don't even have to worry about the implications of P2P software.. hehe... Oh, you might have to rename some of the files with the right extensions after downloading - but it should be simple.... :) Enjoy!

Kanon (anime) - something I've been wanting to watch in a while now.. it's cute and funny! :) Go watch it... ;p

[edit] oh, and i "accidentally" watched 6 episodes now... if you're having a bad day or just simply need something to cheer you up, this is the perfect anime... every character is so unique and lovable! *uguu* [/edit]

Chapter 194 - cambIRdge
this is the IR in Cambridge series (hence the title.. geddit? ;p).

the facts:
the camera: Nikon F5
the lens(es): Nikon 18-35mm, Nikon 28-200mm, Zenitar 16mm fisheye
the film: Kodak HIE (High speed IR film)
filters: none used

Disclaimer: this is NOT your usual black & white photography, which relies on visible light. Infrared photography captures all reflected infra-red light, which gives a good contrast for certain compositions as seen below.

King's College. it's quite grainy and slightly fogged out due to the use of the Zenitar fisheye, with a red-coloured attachment.

I kinda liked the contrast in the picture. The grass is white as it reflects infra-red. PS. nope, it was not snowing...

My only wish is that the two people in the photo was holding hands... would have been a picture perfect moment...

The driveway into Trinity college....

Any comments on any of the shots is very much appreciated... ;p

Chapter 193 - The Far End of the Spectrum
Today, I discovered the Infra-red spectrum... Or rather, discovered the joys of infra-red... ;p Tried to do some infra-red photography today with my Nikon F5. It turned out quite well I must say. And then I went to check out how digital ones were done - which I found out to be relatively disappointing - it was mostly photoshopped stuff... Anyhow, I tried playing with some of the images I already had, and here are some of the results...

The UN Headquarters in New York, in a different "light"

Byodo-In on Hawaii

More REAL shots in IR film to follow soon enough.. ;p

Chapter 192 - The Butterfly Effect
Just watched the Butterfly Effect - i know it's an old movie, but i've been wanting to watch it for ages now and finally I have. It's sooooo amazing, although I must say it is fairly fucked up sick in some parts. I thought it was also quite depressing and honestly quite scary. (personally, i think psychological thrillers are WAY SCARIER than horror films...)

[edit] and i just realised it's been rated [R], which was only shown at the end... anyway, some form of spoiler in the next paragraph, so if you've not watched the movie, you should prob skip it...

[SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!(only for this paragraph] I was kinda sad that they (Evan and Kayleigh) weren't together at the end though. It's really sad! After all that he's bene trying to do and then they meet and don't even say hi?? *sobz*

The thought of the Butterfly Effect is quite scary eh? If you could go back in time to change one thing you've done, what would it be? I think i know....

Chapter 191 - Cambridge Science Festival
wow. this afternoon has to be the most intense 3 hours in a long while.

today was part ii of the Cambridge Science Festival, where I decided to volunteer my time to help out. looking at the photos from previous years (as below), it kinda looked manageable. We were basically helping kids build these dragster "race vehicles" which has a propeller wound with a rubber band, or one of the balloon driven vehicles as shown in the picture below. fair enough, the task isn't supposed to be hard (although the dragster is somewhat much more complicated than the balloon one).

we started setting up around 11am and then the festival started around 2pm. And initally i was wondering, oh, i don't think many people are gonna be here anyway - it's so out of the way and I don't really think it's a big thing. And I was sooo wrong. The crowd starts POURING in around 2.15pm. literally POURING in. kids and their parents just kept milling into the lab. and then 3 hours just went by, and i only a 30-second kit-kat break and a orange juice breather and that was it.

But looking back i really did enjoy it, although i'd wished that i had the time to explore the rest of the grounds, having seen nothing but the two things i was working on, and that i had time to take some photos.

a photo from last year - i bet this was right at the beginning, when there weren't a lot of people. not very representative of the chaos we had. ;p Oh, and the yellow t-shirt and food was well worth the effort though. :)

And daylight saving time tonight. I'm gonna lose one hour of sleep cos of that. :(

Chapter 190 - 5cm/s
5 centimeters per second. it's some relatively new anime. i've only watched one episode, but i thought it's kinda nice. it reminds me of the book "The History of Love" for some reason - which i think is the narrative nature of the anime.

the animation is quite beautiful though.

and the reason why it's called 5cm/s is cos sakura blossoms fall at a rate of 5cm/s apparently. cool eh?

Chapter 189 - Photo Journal
I was gonna write stuff, but... ;p

VinE day - 4 Mar 07
So this is kinda the biggest thing that Victorians in Europe has done so far. It's something started by Allan and Rajesh last year, and I must say i'm a little sore, cos 1. it's so London-centric and 2. i didn't know about it till it was setup (ie. i wasn't involved).

The councillors... all the way from the 17th to the 21st... :)

Raffles Night - 10 Mar 07
Something I hadn't intended to go for initally and went for only 'cos John was trying hard to sell tix... ;p

Amazingly, I met up with Changyong and Winston, who are my lower sec classmates, and Changyong apparently is my twin, cos everyone says we look alike... Really?

Table photo!

Women's Eights Head of the River Race - 17 Mar 07
Somewhat the biggest race on our calendar, other than the Oxbridge boat race of course. It's held on the River Thames, Londo and something like 300 crews take part each year, including international teams..

Crew photo. We're short of one rower though at this point.

You're prob sick of the same old photo of kenny in the cox's seat, but here's another one anyway - from a slightly different perspective. I don't look too happy eh? ;p

Chicago - 21 Mar 07
And yesterday, I went to watch Chicago with a random friend Junhui. Kenny's review of the show? I must say it was pretty enjoyable - the dance moves were slick and the singing was excellent. The actors suited their roles well, and the stage band was awesome. But I thought the storyline was none too creative, and neither was the staging (which was simple). But anyhow, I enjoyed the performance - another musical struck off my list of "to-watch". And as Junhui said, I think my "Watched" list is now longer than my "To-watch" list....

Chapter 188 - Film-o-maniac
Been watching quite a bit of stuff today... something like 6 episodes of friends, 2 episodes of prison break and children of men.

I must say i didn't exactly enjoy children of men... it was a little bit like oh, that's it? for one, it didn't exactly move me - it might be the case that there's global infertility, but why and how? and why is the world in chaos? and what was the whole point at the end? I mean, it was quite a nice science fiction/futuristic film, but seriously, it's making a point and not making it. What a disappointment I must say.

On the other hand, on Friday, I watched The King and The Clown - this korean film and thought it was quite enjoyable. Maybe I just liked it when it's based on some facts at least. And plus the cinematography was rather excellent, and not forgetting that the "female" lead was quite pretty and it was fairly touching. I kinda liked the ending too. this movie was highly recommended by Corrie and you have to trust her taste lah, she is (or will be) the newspaper bitchcritic in the future... ;p

he or she or both?

nice nice.. i loved the themes in this movie...

Chapter 187 - Microsoft SUCKS!
*growl* I HATE MICROSOFT. The first time my mac crashed was when I was installing Microsoft Office. And now, I almost lost what I was working on for the past 2 hours, cos Microsoft refuses to save my file insisting that my disc was full! (it still had 1.2gb left for crying out loud, and I could still print it as a pdf file)

Then i was looking at the help file making sure that the autorecover function was turned on, and then they give me (some) help options for a windows version of microsoft office. sighz. I'm glad I'm on a Mac.

Chapter 186 - Churchill Till I Die
So it was the Cuppers Cup soccer finals today between Churchill & St Catz, which I went down to support. I must say I was pretty amused with the amount of banter cheers that we had.

"St Catz, give us a song
St Catz St Catz, give us a song
St Catz, give us a song" (or something like that. there was also a variation which ended with "cos I can't f**king hear you")

"Shit team, shit fanz (x2)" (to the tune of this clock chime)

"CHURCHILL TILL I DIE!
I'M CHURCHILL TILL I DIE!
I KNOW I AM I'M SURE I AM I'M CHURCHILL TILL I DIE!"

Yeah, so much Churchill pride today. And we were definitely much louder than Catz, even though they had more people than we had. And I must say even though we lost 3-1 in extra time, even though we were playing with 10-men, it was possibly the most spirited and exciting extra-time I've watched. And of course, the undying support from all the Churchill fans from the stands, which even managed to shut the Catz fan up even when they were winning.

Chapter 185 - Art of Coffee
(much as i'd like this to be my coffee machine, it's not... ;p)

I did a Wiki search on Espresso while enjoying an espresso shot today, and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of variations of espresso there are:

Wikipedia: Espresso - Scroll down to the section called "variations".

The next time, I'm gonna try a cafe cuban... :)

Chapter 184 - Commercials
A couple of commercials Sean sent me...

This one's quite cute - except i think the guy is damn evil! haha... watch and you will know... ;p

This one's quite cool from a structural engineer's point of view i think.. (not that i'm a structural engineer.. but at least i know ONE... =X)

Chapter 183 - Sports
Wah, played Netball and Frisbee today. Haven't had a workout in a long time man....

The traditional way of deciding team - owe-ah-peh-ah-som. (actually, it should be orh-ah-peh-ah-som, cos it's hokkien right? black or white or WHAT-the-hell is som?)

And then Chris fell down playing Netball, and got a graze on his knee... This photo was posed by the way... haha... although i think it looks fairly convincing... ;p

And then it was followed by the EGM, which I must have been quite mean at, or so it would have seemed, although honestly, to be fair, I think i wasn't the only one and then I had to rush down to Raffles Night thereafter, which was alright I suppose. Managed to catch up with Changyong and Winston, who were my lower sec classmates - we were reminiscing those yesteryears - which means 1997-1998. WAH, 10 years liaoz......... old already lah... =X

Chapter 182 - The Victorian Spirit
Well, the Victorian spirit lives on with Victorians Day in Europe happening in London today. I suppose for most other colleges/alumni, a gathering like this will involve sitting around and chatting, but because we're Victorians, it's slightly different lah....

1. We do mass dances. All 6 of them in fact. Everyone. Some, like myself, got saboed to do Tribal dance before that...
2. We cheer. Just the spelling cheer and Yo VJC cheer, but enough to tear the house down.
3. Sing the college anthem! With everyone remembering the lyrics. Brings back memories of those Friday assemblies and those post-match-support moments.
4. We watch videos produced by students in VJ. Damn funny man, some of the pranks they played on the teachers and the videos are of really good quality.
5. We do silly trivia - of which, half the answers on screen were actually wrong! Seems like we know better.

Chapter 180 - Lent Bumps 07
Over the course this last week was Lent Bumps 07, which was AMAZING to say the least...

Check out my PINK + BROWN churchill socks.... it's Churchill pride... :)

The Amazing W1 crew which I coxed for....

And the most awesome thing that happened was bumping TWO crews this bumps which is such an achievement, especially in the first division - to row over is honestly considered quite good. To have two row overs and two bumps, how much better can it get? We bumped Trinity Hall on the 2nd day and Girton today. I can still feel the ecstasy... :)

The BUMP on Girton....... Check out the awesome line that Kenny steered... :) So much closer than the one Girton had... hehe...

The final bumps chart at the end of Lent Bump 07. :)

And finally Boat Club Dinner! For once, I didn't take as many photos as I usually do... hopefully people will start sending me photos and I will put them up soon!

FINALLY, there was a TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! As a geek, i think this is a REALLY COOL event......... like absolutely... we don't usually get it in Singapore, so this was soooooooooooooooooo brilliant... I actually watched most of the eclipse, from being able to see half the moon, to it being totally eclipsed and pink....... Pink moon on boat club dinner night!!! How cool is that? PINK PRIDE!!!!

The semi-total eclipse at the time I took it...

Chapter 179 - To Give Thanks
Wow, I just found out there was a train derailment in the UK last Friday... kinda late news, but because we're trapped in this Cambridge bubble of ours, that very often, we don't know what's happening in the world.......

The Article at BBC

Quite scary too considering I have taken this service before at the start of this year when I had to go to the lake district for my mapping course...
