Chapter 265 - 8 days
Unbelievably, there are only 8 days left to term, before me scooting off to Turkey for X'Mas break.... X'mas Turkey? (just a quick side note - i'm not sure if I sounded melancholic in the last couple of posts, but that's possibly because that's the only thing worth writing about... And on that topic, Pierre has been cremated and his ashes have now been scattered on the Housatonic River @ Yale.)

"I've learnt so much working under you Pierre and it'll be really strange not to have you around. We'll miss your neatly documented reports and the meticulous way in which you went about doing productions. There's so much that can't be expressed in words. Thank you for EVERYTHING Pierre and rest in peace.

-my little contribution in the "Tributes to Pierre" booklet

------------------
Anyhow, with just 8 days left to the end of term, there's a million things to be completed - of which I've just gone to London today to do my GRE test (verbal section sucked big time.... ;p), a tonne of supervision work, computing project, boat club sponsorship stuff and more. While I can't wait to go off on my nice little trip, there's way too much to do and too little time. *groans*

Chapter 264 - I'll be alright
Thanks to all of you who've asked if I'm okay.. I really am.... In fact, I still do normal stuff like going to lectures and having nice dinners... :)

It's been nice to be kept updated through email on the proceedings of the memorial services and all. At this very moment, the memorial service should be going on at the Yale Theatre. There's also gonna be one at the Drama Centre this Saturday. If only I could be at either of them.... At least it'll be a nice closure to the incident. In any case, more for my own reference, here are a few newspaper articles, reporting the incident:

The Straits Times
Yale Daily News
New Haven Register
courant.com

It's still quite surreal looking at Pierre's photo... It's hard to believe that he's not with us anymore.... But somehow we'll manage.....

Chapter 263 - A Tribute to Pierre
As requested by Hidayah, here's my little tribute to Mr Pierre-Andre Salim, a dear friend and mentor.... These are all the mentions to Pierre I have written over the past two years...

4 Jan 07 - Kenny writes about his visit to Pierre at New Haven - which was awesome btw. I remember we had a leftover thanksgiving turkey or some sort when his sister was there.

4 Jan 07 - A review on Mary Poppins, recommended by Pierre. I scoffed at Pierre when he was gonna watch Mary Poppins (refer to the 25 Sep 05 post below) and when I was told that it was really good, I didn't believe it until I went to see it for myself. Pierre never lies....

2 Jan 07 - Cabaret the Musical. The last show that we worked on together. (though this was my review on Cabaret in London) Cabaret was also one production which got Pierre (and myself) quite exasperated at points - it wasn't easy.. I remember those sleepless nights moving equipment at 2am in the morning...

4 Dec 06 - My time in the US when I went to watch"Black Snow" - a Yale production which Pierre worked on...

5 Jul 06 - Kenny complains about how hard he's working in Cabaret (directed at Pierre of course... ;p)

2 Jul 06 - All the running about during Cabaret... I do actually miss working on productions, and more so if I'm not working with Pierre...

27 Jun 06 - More on Cabaret....

21 Apr 06 - A reference to Pierre's MSN nick. And also how I'm flying back earlier to work on Cabaret...

12 Mar 06 - An obscure reference to a conversation with Pierre

20 Nov 05 - On Phantom of the Opera
As Pierre said, it's like wah! got "lake", got rowing boat, got chandelier falling, got people falling, got people disappearing, it was simply..... an experience beyond words...

17 Oct 05 - Reminiscing the time during Madama Butterfly where we tried so hard to borrow OHPs...

25 Sep 05 - Meeting up with Pierre in London when he was here to help his sister settle in Liverpool.

I've only known Pierre for about 2.5 years, but in these 2.5 years, we worked so very closely together... Madama Butterfly was the first show we started on and we hit it off right away. Then was Second Link! and then Cabaret the Musical. Often we'd be hanging out at the production office, if not heading out for coffee, or for supper.

And to think our last correspondence was when I sent Pierre a video link to the "12 days of Cantona" video last Wednesday... I know you enjoyed it, so here's another one...

Chapter 262 - We'll Miss You....
Drama School student dies while setting up for production

This has got to be the most devastating news I've received since term started. I don't even know what to say. Life is too short, and to think at this time last year I was preparing to visit you.... As Jo put it, at least he died doing something he loved.. We'll miss you Pierre......

[footnote] I just did a search on "Pierre" on my blog... and I found 26 references to Pierre, of which 25 of them were in reference to the afore-mentioned... Pierre was simply amazing......

Chapter 261 - Suffolk Owl Sanctuary
this is a continuation from Chapter 259, which I didn't manage to finish...

Other than going to Framlingham Castle, we also dropped by the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on our way back - which I thought was a pretty good find. It's basically a scaled-down version of Jurong Bird Park, and they only have raptors (ie. eagles, harriers, etc) and owls. My first time seeing many of these birds - of which the ones above are scops owls.

Can't remember what the bird this was... ;p all the jiao4 names are very confusing to me... I think it could be a harrier?

Snowy owl! Looks familiar eh? Maybe you've seen it somewhere?(*cough*harrypotter*cough*hedwig*cough*)

PS: they were all caged up btw... More pictures available HERE - otherwise my blog will become a bird blog... =X

Just in case I'm giving the idea that i'm always going on little jaunts - it's not actually true... It's just that these are the only things worth writing about, rather than the mundane (thick stacks of) work that i have to complete... :(

Chapter 259 - Weekend Delights
Another weekend's gone by! At least there's something to look forward to on the weekends now - these little things we do to keep ourselves sane... This week was a trip to Framlingham Castle, and we stopped by the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on our way back, followed by a quick visit to Bury St Edmunds..

Framlingham Castle
The town of Framlingham

The entrance to the castle... If you have really sharp eyes, you can probably make out the details in the coat of arms above the door arch. (I couldn't, though they had some artificial artistic impression of it beside the entrance...

One side of the castle wall... This castle is largely ruined, though as you can tell, we can still walk along the walls of the castle... The speck of dust on my camera sensor is really annoying me though...

On the top of the world wall.... I liked the light hexagons in this shot... ;p

Will post pictures from the Owl Sanctuary in my next post.. Shall head off to bed now lest I oversleep again tomorrow morning, as i did on monday... oops! =X

Chapter 258 - Lol Singapore
This was taken off one of the Dattebayo site which does fansubs for Bleach, Naruto, etc... And this post basically "answers" the stupid questions that they've received from people... I liked the last one:

Subject: Legal

I would like to know if this is legal.
Is it legal for me to seed torrents from this page?

Reply:

I hate to break this to you, but it is never legal to download or distribute copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder. This means it is illegal to download anime, whether or not it is licensed. The only thing that licensing changes is the probability that someone will be prosecuted. It is wishful thinking to pretend that it is “allowed” under any circumstances. That being said, unless you live in Singapore, you are unlikely to get into trouble for downloading or seeding the anime we sub.

LOL Singapore,
lafnear

Chapter 257 - Past the halfway mark...
It's now week 5 into term now, past the halfway mark! :) Just 3 weeks more till the holidays, though there's SOOOO much stuff left to do. Supervision work, applications, proposals, and more. :( I should probably cut down on my gallivanting activities, eg. going for too many formals.. haha..

And a week in photos:

5 Nov 07 (mon) - Guy Fawkes Day
"Remember, remember the fifth of November"

7 Nov 07 (wed) - CUMaS fresher's formal @ Jesus
kenny and my "lao puo" (we're separated now apparently... ;p)

8 Nov 07 (thur) - a random formal @ Christ's
The lao-jiaos (ie. 3rd years)... Spot the thorn among the roses.... ;p

9 Nov 07 (fri) - MOE formal @ Caius
Moulding the future of our nation.... All the chers here were a little more well-behaved than the ones we've seen before....

Chapter 256 - Bird Watching...
The 2nd of the series of weekend trips out of Cambridge was to Rutland waters, where we went bird-watching (quite literally). Armed with our bird identification book (Thorburn's Birds), and a camera, we went to the various hides along at Egleston, Rutland Waters in our quest to find birds.

It was quite an experience though - considering we couldn't tell the difference between a shag, a tit or a boobie. (they're not what you think! haha). But anyhow, I must say we did quite well in the end, with the help of the avid birdies bird-watchers in the hide, who helped us identify them.. And I've got good pictures to show for it as well! ;p

A pair of Mallard ducks with their heads "stuck" in the mud...

A lapwing...

A little egret - these new few shots really made my trip to Egleston worthwhile.... :)
Little Egret

Little Egret

A grey heron...

A moorhen.. A juvenile moorhen is called a moor-chick, which by the analagoy to a chicken, should mean that a male moorhen is a moorcock? (read it aloud pls... ;p)

And because there're so many other shots, i suggest you just check out the photo album HERE instead... ;p

----------------------------
And it's so nice to wake up to a lovely morning nowadays, with the yellow autumn colours so vivid right outside my window.... :)

Chapter 255 - To Dr Jack Miller
Yesterday night was the dinner in memorial of Dr Jack Miller, a fellow in college who passed away earlier in May this year.

Dr Jack Miller is one of the prominent alumni members of Churchill College Boat Club, who has been involved in the club since inception, and was a regular figure at the Steering Committee meetings, Boat Club Dinners, and possibly most well known for pushing off crews at the start during bumps. He will be missed dearly.

Listening to the speeches made by the various people during the dinner was really quite inspiring - to know that someone has been so enthusiastic about his work, and to have touched so many lives throughout his lifetime. And he was one of the leading GeoPhysicists in the field, with his expertise in GeoChronology (dating rocks). Somehow even though I didn't know Dr Jack for a long time, he's definitely been missed, especially by his absence in pushing us off during bumps.

The dinner was really good though, and very interesting indeed. We went through a normal 3/4-course dinner, followed by a re-shuffle to a different set of tables for a 2nd round of cheese/port/wine and speeches. The entire dinner was accompanied by no less than 5 different types of wines served, along with some 6 varieties of cheeses. yummy...
